Is it true that the concept of doggie bags/bringing leftovers home from a restaurant is mostly an American thing?

I can’t imagine just leaving half a plate of uneaten food. Yeah reheating leftovers never taste as good as eating fresh, but just leaving the food seems so wasteful. Nevermind just wasting the food itself, you’re wasting money.
