No idea bro, I've never brewed my own hot mate, just had it with friends. Tereré (basically a kind of iced mate that is consumed primarily in Paraguay and some regions of Brazil) is a different matter, there's no real complicated method to building it up like mate and you can basically freestyle it, use whatever you want as flavouring. Some people have it with various spices, natural or instant fruit juice, iced tea and even soft drinks and beer though that's kinda too much for me. Also, there's some pretty wild flavours in the market - pic related, in my local neighbourhood market, some tereré flavours like cherry, grape, pineapple, coffee and even "energy drink" and "ice blue", whatever those are.
If you search for it on YouTube you'll probably be able to find some pretty good tutorials on mate though (that is, if you can stand the horrifyingly annoying uruguayan/argentinian accent).
