Does anyone here actually opened and owned their own restaurant? Care to share your story? Offer advice?

Over Thanksgiving I got to talking to my little cousin, who is basically my younger brother. He's worked as a cook at a BBQ restaurant a few years and knows the business and has gotten damn good at his smoking and cooking. His restaurant is small and family owned. I've also worked in the food business awhile now at a much busier store overseeing catering. I also deal with ordering, restocking, inventory, rotating product, food prep, and transitioning shifts. My place is corporately owned and much much busier. We're both at a point where they are asking us to move up in the store/company.

Anyway we were hanging out talking about the business and got on the subject of opening a restaurant together. He's mainly a cook, I also cook at home. At work I do mostly behind the scenes work. I think together we could actually properly manage a store and produce good food.

It isn't serious or anything, but the more I think about it the more I think it might be a good thing for us to do. We both love food and cooking and are probably going to stay in the business. His place is smaller and family run, unless he find the money to buy it from the owner he won't make much money even if he moves up. My place is corporate and they want me to move up, I'm not sure I want to do that though.

How do you even open a restaurant?
