how long would you guys age a barleywine?

i got a bunch of barleywines (from assorted northwest breweries) two christmases ago.

opened one after a year and it was overwhelmingly alcohol smelling, really wasn't pleasant. before even tasting the smell was enough to burn my nose.

i'm familiar with high abv beers, but this was exhausting and overpowering.

so now they're in the garage working on a second year.
