Alot of Abbey beers taste simlar to German dark Bock beers (picrel). However, there're two major differences:
1. bock beers' ABV are lower (6%-7%)
2. less sweet
Maybe you could try to get your hands on some dark bock beers. Not sure how available they're in the states. Here in Krautmenistan a bottle (500mL) runs you approx. $0.8.
