Yeah, Salary is a fucking meme, it's just a way for the company to get around federal laws re: overtime. I have a dislike for the tradition because I feel it promotes a mutually dishonest relationship between the employee and the employer. As an employee on salary, I want to work as little as possible in order to maximize my profit to time ratio. As an employer, I want to work my Salaried employee's as much as possible to maximize my use to cost ratio. Both entities seek to exploit each other, undermining any kind of relationship besides a cold mercenary one. Meanwhile corporations talk out of the side of their mouths about employee appreciation and value because they realize it's getting harder and harder to hold onto employee's and training is a huge money sink (as is the loss associated with trainee mistakes), but actually paying your workers in relation to their effort would be a huuuggee reduction in planned profit margin. This is why shit like employee luncheons, Christmas parties, etc all exist - it's way cheaper for the company than paying you fairly or giving you a raise, plus studies have shown that the appreciation for making a fair wage wears off fast. It's just not worth it for a company to pay you in value, you won't even be thankful for it soon enough.

On the other hand, while a waged employee may not WANT to work, they at least get paid for their time no matter what - and depending on the laws of their country, get paid MORE if the company works them more than a set amount of hours per week. This means a waged employee may even want to work more, to gain more, and it incentivizes the company to work them LESS and plan and manage it's human resources properly.

People shit on wagies but salary is a scam. It used to be salaried came with benefits but those have gotten excised as cost reduction to the point you'd be hard pressed to tell apart a manager or a general employee's packages sometimes.
