Monte Cristo used to be on the Benningan's (franchise chain) menu. Their version, I thought, was traditional. It was a club sandwich on whole wheat, a turkey-swiss on one side, and a ham-cheddar on the other side. It was crispy eggy-battered and deep fried, not pan griddled, but that would be fine too. It was sprinkled with powdered sugar, sliced crosswise, and served with raspberry jam on the side.
It came with skin-on french fries, not that many, just enough. Most people could only eat 1/2 or 3/4 of a monte cristo. It was splittable. There was a little bit of the oozy cheese that got caramelized with the batter, and added to the cheese flavor.
I MISS BENNINGANS.
Oh, they weren't that awesome, but the broccoli bites with honey-creole mustard, and the monte cristo were always the redeeming two menu items.
