Upton Sinclair's novel "The Jungle" being written to show how shitty it was to work in a meat packing plant and shed light on the bad working conditions and low pay, but instead people just got grossed out about dead rats and human blood getting into their food and the FDA was created. more or less. it was a big deal at the time, too bad his novel didn't have the intended effect.
