it's interesting to consider the yerba mate market in comparison to the pu-erh market
you have some intriguing similarities, such as both shifting from smoky processing to cleaner and less smoky to fit a wider public. also the fact that both are focused around packaged products with wrappers and can advertise using aged material (though the maxium ageing for yerba mate is much shorter)
but of course yerba mate doesn't really have a culture of rich fanatics around it, the vast majority of the industry is still focused on factory blends for the common south-american and occasional milder productions for the average westerner. attempts to gentrify it are a new phenomenon and limited in scope, I've only really seen one site that sells single origin, wild-grown, freeze dried or other such quirky varieties of mate, at premium prices

I think that kind of douchebaggery is less common the more mainstream mate is in a given country
here in Poland it's popular enough that people generally don't fall for this hippie mystical ritual bullshit

ofc there are some basic rules to mate-drinking like proper water temperature, but these have an actual practical reason
