There used to be an extensive trolly network to bring commuters into town from the burbs
The automotive industry bought it all up and tore the rails out of the streets to make way for newer, more "modern" busses

And of course after WWII there was a construction boom with the newly invigorated economy, all new infrastructure was built entirely around the automobile because busses are for smelly poors and trains are communism.
