What are some japanese dishes that are wildly different from anything in western cooking?
I think many popular jap dishes would be considered comfort food and (especially since I have to order stuff online) are not worth cooking imo.
>oyakodon
eggs and chicken, but slightly sweet!
>gyudon
beef and onions. but slightly sweet
>japanese curry
chicken curry, but slightly sweet!

you get the idea

You cannot change my mind about this. Let's put memes aside for a second. 90% of dishes is flavored with soy sauce, sake, mirin and dash. The taste of mentsuyu (that's the name of the mixture of those ingredients) tastes ok for the first four bites and then becomes nauseating. Unless you're born eating japanese food, soy sauce and miso will tire the shit out of you. The most popular dishes (gyoza, ramen, tonkatsu) outside of Japan are all directly stolen from other cuisines. Sushi is unironically the only jap dish that holds his ground. Please refrain from posting in this thread if you've never tasted jap food; as for the others, you know I'm right.
