To be expected that the level of discourse is not up to par. Not really something to be disappointed about, different place different crowd and talking points.
To be fair I had very little clue about independent bottlers and their role for a moderately long time. I have quite enjoyed getting quality bottlings from e.g. Signatory abroad at a pittance when there is no marketing on the bottle, just quality stuff. Unfortunately stuff from Blackadder and virtually unavailable here and costs an arm and a leg from bars.

Just to be a fellow 'hipster', if you had to pick two whiskies to sample, I would recommend JD and Kavalan single cask (solist series). Really helps to open your eyes when the contrast is stark enough.
