as an american that hates america and its fucktarded justice system, I've thought about it enough to say with certainty that it all has to do with money/capitalism. Everyone knows pedos should get the bullet, yet if you look into it even the most heinous of sex crimes regarding children barely ever serve more than a year. Meanwhile if you sell pot (especially if youre not white) you get decades. Or you commit tax fraud (without enough money to pay off officials) its decades. Truly disgusting because I feel the death penalty can be warranted in certain circumstances, but it feels like its a bone to throw to working class americans on one hand, and the tiny shitty virtue signaling of the last meal is like its foil, like "were still kind of humane!"
anyway if it tldr american prison systems have a system that allows for "not slave labor" but they pay inmates pennies/fractions of pennies for it and all I can say there is take that as you will. I wish all of america would get nuked into a desertous waste
