Where did "cola" even come from? What is it? Is it supposed to be caramel flavor or....? What is the cola flavor?

It seems, interesting to me, that a flavor could just be made up and popularized so well. Usually in human history we have pre established flavors, like certain fruits or what have you, but cola confuses me

How did cola become the default soda? Soda can be made in any flavor your can imagine, any popular flavor or mankind, and yet this seemingly random caramel flavored black sludge became the number one face of soda and most relevant flavor of all time, with only lemon lime being closely behind it?
