Fresh whole-bean coffee is the first and most important step.
From there you're just playing with small variables;
>fine-tune the grind size to your taste
>pre-boil the water
>pull the pot off the heat at the right moment but let it finish

In the end I just switched to a phin, more or less the same coffee with far less hassle.
