tried natto (fermented soy beans) when i went to japan

holy fucking shit the texture is absolutely horrid

every bite is like taking a shot of slugs, vomit, and okra slime all at once, only it stays in your mouth no matter how much rice you eat to try and wash it away

I'm not a picky eater. I like a lot of fermented and pungent foods. I like soy.
I thought it was just a meme, just a bunch of Americans being overly picky like all those stupid buzzfeed videos.
I was wrong.
I was so wrong.
This shit is OBJECTIVELY terrible.

Okay people, lets start a thread about food that you probably think are gross, but are very normal elsewhere that you have tried.

I've had it, too. It's really not bad. But, like Japanese natto, it's not the taste that's the issue. It's the slimy, gooey texture it tends to acquire.

Sup' /ck/. I really miss natto from my time in Japan and due to none being commercially available in my country I plan to make some of my own. Any of you ever done this? I read that I will need to keep it above 38c for at least 24h, so how do you recommend doing this? Where is a good place to get Natto starters in the EU? Any other tips?
