thats exactly it, it was a trench to put the food in, i personally am not a fan because i like a lot of toppings, but its great for low topping subs. anything more than 4 or 5 toppings and it gets messy

it allows the dressing not to be only on the top of the toppings, which some enjoy.

its harder to manage anything saucy with it like a pizza or meatball sub.
