Pikesville 6 Yr Rye
Price: $49.99 USD
Specs: 55% abv, 51% rye, 39% corn, 10% malted barley, SRW
Color: Deep gold
Nose: Black pepper, toffee, vanilla, and oak. Rye is forthcoming but has clearly been tempered to appeal more to bourbon drinkers. Dark chocolate/cocoa and cola nut. A hint of dill on the end, but not a lot of savory qualities overall. Pleasant nose but stark divide between bourbon and rye notes.
Palate: Orange liqueur and toffee, dill and pepper towards the middle, caramel and vanilla moving to the finish. There’s a lot to like here, and the sweetness is understated compared to its other heaven hill compatriots. Chocolate re-emerges after multiple sips and is enhanced by a drop of water.
Conclusion: Lots of complexity here, each sip offering up some different notes as the palate acclimates. Some of the notes feel discordant at times, but the whole package comes together nicely with some air and some time. Niggling complaints aside, this is a great rye and definitely worth the money.
