Diner chains are like a combination of a fast food place and a sit down restaurant like you mentioned from pulp fiction. They're one step above fast food, but usually below a proper (usually privately owned) sit down restaurant. They're basically where you go to eat with friends or a girlfriend on a Friday/Saturday if you don't have a lot of money but want something better than fast food.

I'll give a nod to Red Robin. I go there whenever I want a step up from In-N-Out and or when it's happy hour.
