Not physical environment, dummy. Bad leadership decisions, HR department that is an absolute nightmare that fucks over people and is always backed up, Washington DC and administrations cause chaos, and a backwards ranking system where lower-paid employees are overworked while those at higher levels often do very little and don't even have to be supervisors. Public interaction can be very toxic and sometimes dangerous. Compared to other agencies (except for BLM and NPS) people are underpaid and can take a decade or more to reach pay levels that people in other agencies can get in entry level positions. Fire fighting is a massive racket embezzling untold millions of taxpayer dollars, firefighters are rapist drunks but their bad deeds get blamed on the rest of the agency. We have a problem with employee suicide and we have had several in the 5 years I've been in my current duty station.
But hey at least we get to work outside.

Oh yeah since 2020 we have had a bunch of people die. Causes of death in order of when they happened, off the top of my head:
>lady slowly died of a brain tumor
>guy blew his brains out in his friend's car, he was a close friend and neighbor of mine but it wasn't my car
>another guy shot himself, his wife (another employee) found him when she got home
>drowned in grand canyon
>unknown/heart attack, coworkers found his car upside down in a river after he didn't show up on Monday
>disappeared riding snowmobile alone, still haven't found him
>killed in a snow tubing accident
Every time someone dies, we have a pizza party. Leadership rents out a pizza parlor party room and we have a little funeral for them. This is not a joke. I have lots of pizza party stories you wouldn't believe.

You'd think but no. Here's a hint, Smokey is our mascot. My friend that shot himself was a vet though along with all the typical vet shit, depressed, drunk and hopeless.

"Fuck up to move up" is a real thing especially in the government world, because after a person reaches a certain point in their career it's virtually impossible to fire them due to politics and the sheer amount of work and money it would take to go through the process. People that fuck up big time in their position often get "promoted" to a job that's higher paying but one that the person often does not actually want, usually a rubber room position that they can't really fuck up any worse.

The lady I was talking about was a Ranger or the boss of one of our field offices. Her signature was on a decision to not put out a lightning fire which ended up taking off and burning 400,000 acres of forest as well as several homes. Of course SHE didn't actually make the decision, the fire fighters did, but being the highest authority there she signed the paperwork. Fire never gets blamed for their poor decisions because it's bad optics. So she got blamed and promoted to the DC office.
That's not to say she was a good Ranger, she was a diversity hire and not well liked, but that particular incident was not her fault. But yeah the lamb cake thing was strange and the whole "party" was uncomfortable especially with her clearly unhappy speech she gave.
