There's an additional problem you are no doubt aware of, which is the actions of large pizza chains, by virtue of being so large and ubiquitous, have informed on our collective opinions about what exactly a pizza "is" to the point where my cousin went to Italy and complained the pizza was burnt and didn't have total cheese and ingredient coverage and was too thin and chewy (and such small portions!). He literally thought it was weird and complained to the waiter. I've been to Naples, the pizza is great

Thankfully if you live in a city with at least 150k people it is possible to get a great pizza, of different styles including Neapolitan, but I feel sorry for the small town fucks who have their brains broken by garbage and can't even enjoy a good one when they encounter it because it's not what they're used to

I've had pizzas around the country that would not be out of place at NYC pizzerias but not often. I think in general though NYC makes their pizzas thinner than most places and always cuts them into triangles (which is not convention in the midwest)
