I've never personally been accosted by a vegan, and when I dated vegetarians they usually began to slowly lust after whatever I was eating in front of them, but there's that old meme of loud preachy vegans that will seemingly persist forever, regardless of truth.

the british do a thing called "jacket potatoes" which is basically what you did. Up to 2 hours at a high temp. Crispy outside and dry starchy inside. I prefer it this way, actually.
