Elijah Craig Barrel Proof
Price: $69.99 USD
Specs: 59.1% abv, 78% corn, 12% malted barley, 10% rye
B521 (Second release bottled May, 2021)
Color: Sherried scotch
Nose: Caramel and cinnamon really punch out, with some wood glue/toast underneath. Vanilla ice cream and fresh waffle cone buried a little bit further in there. Strangely softer than Larceny BP
Palate: Caramel leads here and seems to influence everything else—a bit of rye spice, a bit of vanilla, a bit of oak, but it’s all through the lens of caramel. Easy drinker for the proof, but also a bit simplistic considering the pricetag. On the low side of alcohol for previous ECBP releases, some going in excess of 70% abv. Water reins in the caramel and lets the other notes sit on their own, and also exposes more of the wood char.
Conclusion: Same mashbill as the McKenna, just younger, uncut, and a blend of barrels rather than a single one. Rounder than Larceny but underperforms McKenna’s nuance. This is a good whiskey, but considering it’s priced the same as every other premium release barring the unobtainables, it seems to lack clarity and nuance. I’ll probably play with this in some cocktails.
