I love Laphroaig but the standard 10 sucks as do most Laphroaigs out there. Stuff like the 10 Cask Strength and the Cairdeas lineup definitely show a more toffee and rich vanilla element from bourbon cask maturation that balance out the medicinal and peaty elements of the spirit, but Islay peat is definitely not for everyone the same way rauchbier isn't for everyone.

Also even if you don't like their whisky, Islay is a beautiful place for hiking and animal watching. Lots of beautiful sights and diverse bird populations with the occasional dolphin, shark and puffin sightings if you go out far. Also world class shellfish and mutton.
