It depends my electric stove as seen above has a batshit crazy burner that will put all gas stoves to shame.
If you have a weak ass stove grilling is indefinably better
Also gas grills kind of suck too. If you grill it should be on charcoal

When shopping for a steak buy a ribeye if you are new to cooking slabs of meat.

Look for fat dispersed throughout the meat. I would go for boneless early on as its easier to cook evenly.

Cook hot and fast on either a cast iron pan or a hot grill.
Salt the shit out of it 2~ hours before cooking let it sit out to room temp.
On a hot grill with 1.5 inch steak it should be around 4 mins per side to a nice medium-rare
Ribeye is ideal at medium-rare or even closer to medium. If its a leaner cut cook it more rare. The slightly hotter finish temp is ideal for the ribeye so that the fat can render a bit. Trust me it will remain soft and juicy.
NY strip should be cooked a bit closer to medium or close to rare as it has less fat to render.

I cooked over 100 ribeye steaks at home over the past 5~ years
