My parents both cook the way they always did but my father, who does most of the cooking, has lung cancer, so the end is approaching.
Appreciate them while you have them, I guess.

Fucking love herring.
Pickled like in your pic, fried and then pickled, just fried, battered and fried, salted and boiled, smoked...
It's a delicious flavourful fish and it's one of the cheapest fishes where I live, which is Denmark.

I have not yet tried surströmming because that actually is pretty expensive here. Like $20 for a tin or something. In part because there are certain issues with transporting it, in part because there's not a big market for it, and probably in part because the meme status allows for a price hike. I would imagine that almost all surströmming consumed in Denmark is eaten for the sake of making a video or completing a "dare".

You practice.
For gutting and skinning I suggest buying a large number of small cheap fishes. It probably varies what that is depends on where you live. For me I suppose it would be herring.
Even if you fuck up the first time you fillet them, and you will, you can still make a nice meal out of them.
Watch some youtube videos about the actual technique. It's so blessedly easy to get good instructional videos for things these days.

I love this guy. I wonder why he's almost never mentioned here.
