for a sheltered poor teen, vegans are the most crazy weird far-out version of "someone eats a different diet than me" they've met IRL, and if you will think back to high school you will remember there was probably that vegetarian (unlikely a vegan in high school) who was always talking about animal rights, wore black, and listened to edgy music

also, increased vegetable matter in your diet is considered an elite luxury and there's something to be said for class warfare
