You lost me at tater tots, but you didn't lose Wisconsin. They threw in nacho cheese, ranch and scallions for good measure.

I've had the loaded tot-za from Topper's. It's an abomination.

Absolutely not. But I have seen an explosion of pizza stupidity in my lifetime. Stuffed crust, BBQ chicken, ranch dressing, breakfast pizza, whatever the fuck Pizza Hut and LC's are doing this week... Worst example is pic related, also from the Midwest. People are free to fuck with pizza all they want to, and others are just as free to like it. But at a certain point it's just fucking stupid. And we've sailed way past that point.

Some of the things they do to pizza in the US, particularly the Midwest are so awful you almost want to try them out of disbelief. That happened to me at a truckstop while driving through Indiana. Something called loaded breakfast pizza was available. It was a pizza crust topped with sausage gravy, cheese, scrambled eggs and bacon. In Wisconsin I had pic related, which was a ranch base with tater tots, bacon and nacho cheese. Very strange things happen to pizza in the middle of the country.

Pic related is worst I've ever had. Ranch sauce, tater tots, bacon, scallion and cheddar cheese sauce. A horrible abomination from, you guessed it, the Midwest.

Drag someone from Manhattan to Wisconsin and serve the garbage like pic related from toppers with ranch dipping sauce and if they don't comment they're really gritting their teeth, and you know it.

But that's my point. Food that would just be normal everywhere else becomes a lightning rod in the Midwest because it's not something grandpa ate. As for hot dogs I live in NYC. Hot dogs are a thing here, too. But while we love places like Nathan's on Coney Island, and might even tell a tourist not to discount the hot dog at Katz's we don't get all precious about them because there's so much else going on here foodwise.
>>9353421
That's what people say. Having visited recently and tried it all I can say is that to me it was fucking disgusting. Then again I don't eat any chain pizza, so maybe that's part of it. But Toppers in particular seems to go for a Pizza Hut level of overkill, making up for cheap ingredients by piling them on, then giving you ranch dressing to put on top. Pic related. Fucking disgusting. Who puts ranch, bacon, cheddar AND fucking tater tots on a pizza?! That's just grim as fuck.

This? I thought it was fucking disgusting. Experienced it visiting in-laws in Wisconsin. They all seemed to think it was wonderful. But that's my point. Different people have different standards. Same goes for wine. The guy who has gotten into good Burgundy might pass on a run of the mill Bordeaux, but someone who likes Yellowtail or Barefoot would see that same Bordeaux as a waste of money. Different people have different ideas about what's good.

This is the thing. I've never seen anyone dip good pizza in ranch, just the kind of bad stuff you get from chain pizza places.

>Anthony Bourdain can't concieve of people who are competent, intelligent, productive, and completely disagree with everything about his worldview without being bloodthirsty hitler-worshipping monsters. They exist, but he can't grasp that.
This is true. Most of New York (with the exception of Staten Island) kind of gapes in horror at what large chunks of the rest of the country's normal. Politics is part of it, sure. A Reagan, Bush Jr or Trump gets elected and we're in disbelief. We consoled ourselves with the fact that a lot of us were going to get richer under those leaders, but they weren't the direction we wanted to see our country move in. And it was hard to understand why people voted for them. From our view it looked like a mixture of fear, jingoism and racism - all things New Yorkers try to play down. I honestly know a few people who had panic attacks last election night. The richest guy I know has done business with Trump and knew him personally for a couple years. He stands to make millions off the proposed tax cuts, and still thinks the guy is an idiot.

But it goes beyond politics. New Yorkers have trouble understanding other things the rest of the country Food is a big one, too. Don't forget Manhattan had fafafel joints before we had a McDonald's. We had neighborhood delis and pizza joints before chain restaurants existed. We had fine dining restaurants before many towns in this country were established. We've been eating Chinese food for over a hundred years, and Japanese has been commonplace for almost thirty years. The idea that in other parts of the country people are enthusiastic about pic related dumbfounds us.

True, but it's nowhere nearly as crazy unhealthy as pic related, which is commonly served with ranch dressing.

Pizza is Italian in origin, and a huge Italian American thing. Nobody gets bent out of shape when the toppings resemble things you might fins on a pizza in Italy. But in North America (and Japan, for that matter) some pizza makers take great glee in coming up with the most outrageous pizzas possible. Pineapple and Canadian bacon was that back in the 60's. BBQ chicken was that in the 90's. Today it's Buffalo chicken with ranch dressing. And pic related. LC's is doing BBQ beef now, too. These pizzas are retarded, and Hawaiian pizza pretty much got the ball rolling on this level of retardation. It's the symbol of taking a good idea like pizza and fucking it up just because you can.

It's a thing in the Midwest and parts of the South. I didn't believe it until I saw it in Wisconsin. I watched an obese guy open a container of chipotle ranch dressing and pour it over a slice of pic related. People do this in the part of the country where pizza like this is considered normal.

Yep. There's all kinds of retarded pizza for retarded people out there. Pic related.
