Tomatoes were only grown for their looks because they were completely indigestible. They didn't become a food until the 1700s when the Italians managed to rear the fruit without it containing solanine. It took until the 1800s for the plant to become a staple in Italy, then the rest of the world.

Ancienne ("heirloom") tomatoes refers to those old tomato varieties that were developed in and around the castles and estates of European nobles before the plant became an industrial staple.

Golden apple in Italian. From the French pomme d'or, who brought yellow cherry tomatoes to southern Italy as an ornamental plant.

OP didn't post a fresh tomato off the vine. He/she posted a tomato variety grown for shelf life and transportation purposes, which can be grown on water, in greenhouses, which contain 0 nutrients and even less taste.

I'm with OP. Pic related.

Both your tomatoes are worthless. Grown for and developed by companies whose sole concern is maximizing profit.

All you get is fastest growing, thickest skin for transport, longest shelf life possible, best growing in greenhouses on the left. On the right you get tomatoes that are a bit more meaty, and that's it.

If you're looking for healthy, nutritious, balanced food: grow your own. Only eat tomato from June till September.

PS: never ever put tomatoes in a fridge. Pic related. It's actual tomatoes.

Last time I checked there were 10K different tomato varieties worldwide. The types of tomatoes you want are usually called "ancienne" or "heirloom".

Get them from farmers who grow them in summer and do poultry in winter. The alternative is to do it yourself (all you need is seeds).

Pay attention to weather: with a good positioned greenhouse and a good spring or mild autumn you can get awesome results.

Stop buying them in winter, start making tomato side dishes for friends' barbecues.

Pic related. It's what tomatoes actually look like.
