It varies from province to province, but you can only buy wine in certain grocery stores (as long as they're not located near a liquor store). Gov't stores have pretty limited hours, but private stores are often open to the legal max: 9AM to 11PM, all days including holidays.
We have crap taxes, too, but it's balanced across the board. A fifth of vodka is ~$24.
