I'd never heard of this until I worked with a bunch of Mexicans and I was the only white guy. They'd bring all sorts of tacos, tamales and whatnot and we'd munch down halfway through the shift. I'd see all of them walk away and grab some radishes from the shelf (I was a produce stocker at a grocery store) when we were eating. One day I asked them why. And the general reaction was "what do you mean why? WHY NOT?". Like it was just something normal to do. I explained that I've never seen anyone just randomly eat a fresh radish in the middle of a meal and that it must have something to do with Mexican food culture. They were surprised that I didn't eat radishes with my food. Eating radishes with tacos is as normal as eating fries with a burger if you are a Mexican.

Anyway we talked about it and I don't even think most of them really thought about why they do it, they just do. From what I gathered it cleans the grease out of your mouth, cuts the spice, settles an upset stomach thats had too much grease or spice, and cleans the palate. They are also delicious, they added. And shit, they were right. Radishes are a perfect companion to tacos for all those reasons, and they taste good.

They all love tacos and burritos.

Different anon than those you're responding to, but Tapatio is sort of like a lower rung of Mexican/south American sauces. Tapatio tastes bretty good but it's the cheap shit. If you like it and are willing to spend more than a dollar you can get shit thats just like it but better. Cholula comes to mind, it's the higher quality version of Tapatio. There are others that are better that Cholula.

Now, I like those thick, syrupy, hoppy, yeasty, dark, cloudy, and smelly craft brews as much as the next tasteful motherfucker, but cmon. Try drinking one of those in the baking sun after spending all day doing shit in the baking sun. Disgusting. You gotta understand Mexican beer has its place. No it isn't fancy and nowhere near the best, but it has its applications and I enjoy it. For a drunk like me it's more refreshing than water in the summertime.

Do Mexicans eat those? I have a Mexican friend who was telling me this the other day. He said once a year people in his region harvest ants in the middle of the night and its a big deal. They'll camp out all night and get a big bag of them, can only get them once a year. The ants are larger than usual. He was fucking stoked because his dad in Mexico mailed him a bag of them. Apparently you mix them with a little spice and some peppers and eat with tortilla chips or tortillas. That fucker said he was going to let me try some but he got stoned and ate the whole bag in one night. Anyone know what I'm talking about'?

I agree, I've worked with Mexicans at several jobs. Those guys will work any shift and will work their asses off. I actually now have a ton of respect for them now, I used to not like them. Some of them can be assholes if you are white, know no spanish and don't work hard. If you work hard and respect them as equal to you they can be great people.

For awhile I worked third shift unloading pallets of groceries and stocking coolers at a grocery store, I was the only white there. The guys were very suspicious and apprehensive of me at first, they acted like they didn't speak English and didn't really want me to help with anything. But after I busted my ass working alongside them and brought em breakfast a few times as a friendly gesture I guess decided I was "OK" and started talking to me. They all spoke English pretty well, they had me fooled. They'd still talk to one another in spanish but they started switching to English alot of the time to include me in the conversation. Great bunch of guys really, all older Mexicans. I ended up making friends with em and would go get beers after work with the group, even went fishing with them a few times. Turns out most of em were related and the ones that weren't were from the same town in Mexico, they all came here together 20 years ago and are just decent humans trying to make a better life for them and their kids. I don't work there anymore but still drop in from time to time to have lunch and catch up. I guess my point is that you shouldn't be afraid of them, they're just workers who usually speak a different language. Respect, work hard, and treat em as equals and they might surprise you.

if you just get plain chicken at a mexican joint, i guarantee you that its thigh meat. which imo is tastier and more tender. also, they slow cook it in alot of liquid, seasonings, and marinade. if you want to replicate it, but a pack of chicken thighs and cook them in a slow cooker. for the liquid use a fajita marinade, some red pepper, paprika, cumin, cilantro, and maybe some lime. when it is cooked, remove the meat from the bones and discard the bones. put the meat back into the juice and set on the simmer setting. let it simmer in the juice and shred it with a fork. when its tender and falling apart, then you know its good and ready.

i would guess that the problem is that you are using chicken breasts. try thighs. its cheaper, tastier, and i promise it is the meat they use at your fave mexican joint.

because we aren't fucking mexicans, and most of us weren't raised on mexican food. but we like mexican food sometimes, as long as it isn't too gross and non-palatable to our american tastes.

and don't start talking shit on our tastes, everyone has certain regional ingredients and methods that they enjoy and are comfortable with. there are things in mexico that make me feel the same way you feel about taco bell.

that being said, taco bell isn't really mexican food. it's definitely american food designed to appeal to american tastes, the dishes just happened to be inspired by mexican dishes, and we are okay with that. you should be too.

so stop your fucking bitching. taco bell has little to do with mexico, and noone gives two fucks what a mexican thinks about it. we just like the taste, and if you weren't such a mexi-righteous pretentious ass, you'd probably think it tasted nice as well.
