Keep your water level low and steady. Inch, inch and a half above your coffee. It'll keep your slurry temp higher and help avoid some bypass. You want your water going through the coffee, not around it. Swirling the shit out of the bed early only really helps the shittiest of grinders to remove fines from the slurry and trap them high on your filter. Gently agitate/stir/swirl early on to make sure theres no dry pockets.

Water is supposed to flow evenly through it anon. You want all the water passing through all the coffee, not clogging the filter, pooling up top, and flowing around outside the bed.
