A grill is a tool used to hold food items above heat sources.
It's generally used to maximize heat exposure or allow liquid to seep from the food as it cooks.

BBQ is a method of cooking, generally performed on a grill so as to maximize exposure to smoke.
Though its use changes colloquially, BBQ traditionally refers to smoking with indirect heat, and in some regions like the Southern Appalachians, it exclusively refers to pork products.
While BBQ is usually performed with a grill, these grills are specialized to easily allow for indirect heating methods. "Grilling" is more commonly used to refer methods with direct heat and open flame.

Again, keep in mind this is colloquial.
If someone invites you to a BBQ, don't be surprised if it's just direct heat grilling.
