Yeah, it is a bit stilted. Maybe even more than necessary for the matter at hand.

But it does not seem very artificial to me. The reviewer is putting down specific points of critique in some detail. A certain sophistication should be expected and is needed to bring the thoughts across.

Also, it is not so elaborate to require a thesauras. At best, it is a bit snobbish. And as another anon pointed out, that still makes it miles better than the usual "food was bad" reviews, that give you nothing to work with.
