Not exactly. A medium bowl of gyudon on Sukiya have more calories than a big mac.

The trick is not just the number of calories, it is also where they come from. Japanese eat a lot of complex carbs (rice on every meal) which boost the metabolism (it means that they burn more calories even when not doing anything). They exercise (which boost metabolism too) every day by walking/bike to school/work/convenience store instead of using a car just to go to the corner like many people do in western countries. Their ingestion of simple carbs (which slowdown your metabolism) are smaller. I have been to Japan and their sweets and drinks are much less sweet than American stuff. Not only their Coca-Cola can is smaller but it also contains less calories from sugar per volume.

So basically they increase the amount of calories they use every day by eating complex carbs and exercise instead of adopting diets and lifestyles that slow down your metabolism (sedentary fucks that gorge themselves with high fructose corn syrup).

And before some fatass blame genetics, Japanese populations on western diet are as fat as the other westerns.
