Murrica, where your opinion isn't legally valid if you don't swear on a fictional book, you can't hold public office unless you follow a specific religion, but you can buy machine guns if you have medically documented issues with self-harm, violent mood swings, or drug abuse.

The only people I've ever encountered who are like this are non-denominational megachurch stupids from flyover country. The kind who home school their kids and refuse to get them vaccinated.

I'm not aware of any mainstream brand of Christianity that actually attempts to follow random quotes from the old testament like that. If you keep that up you'll find enough inconsistencies that you'll eventually realize it's impossible. But semiliterates rustics who can barely read at 30 WPM obviously aren't going to get very far along, even in their entire lifetimes, so they keep rediscovering funny stuff like that.

I'm not religious, but there's a case here for having an educated class of elites to interpret the bible for the stupids, and put it in simple terms. It's what the church did in ancient times. Kind of like having tax software do your taxes for you. Unless you're going to make a legitimate effort at understanding the tax code you're better off letting an expert do it.

But of course, on the prairie, educated clergy were and remain a rarity, which is how this nondenominational megachurch tradition came about. As with all professions, decent people prefer cities.
