Most whiskies roundly described as "balanced," in my experience, lack character or intense flavors. Intense flavors and strong characters don't often exist when too many flavors are all balancing each other out. I like whiskies with character and intense flavors. For example, I prefer Corryvreckan's brutish approach to peat to Uigeadail's peat/sherry balance. Your mileage may vary.
