Is american food actually sweet compared to other countries?

My in-laws were visiting from London and my wife's dad kept saying that everything he's eaten has been sweet. Burgers, pizza, bbq, everything he had he said he felt sick after because it tasted like it was packed with sugar. He even went as far as getting greens and baking an unseasoned chicken breast to eat and said it was STILL sweet. He ended up going home after 3 days of being in the states because he couldnt eat any food. Was he just having a schizophrenic moment or was he right?
