It looks ridiculous but it's actually a fairly clever way of portioning something awkward like that. The product randomly falls into the boxes on the side, which are weighing scales, it works out which ones add up as close as possible to the target weight, then it releases those ones into the container.

It looks ridiculous, but it's pretty effective at parcelling out consistent amounts of something irregular without taking up a ton of conveyor space. It randomly spreads the product into the bins on the side, then releases the bins that add up as near as possible to the target weight.

I think they usually just send them around again. They could slow down the conveyor, but then I guess you'd get too many sausages piled on top of each other.

Not that guy, but I think he's right. They're called multihead weighers, and apparently these noodle torture carousels are the best method we've come up with.
