The tenets of religion, anti-homosexuality being one of them, were put in place to help society grow and advance, and not stagnate and degrade. whether you believe in the mystical aspects of religion is a moot point. The major religions are literally the culmination of humanity's wisdom in a form that can be passed on generation to generation to help us continue on our journey. If something is specifically mentioned in religion as not being advisable, it should not be a warning taken lightly.
