Alot of people like to say that NYC is the mecca of food in the U.S., but after living here my whole life I have to say that some incredibly popular foods ubiquitous in the United States are practically unheard of here.
I've been getting a lot into barbeque and I'm not even gonna talk about the pathetic BBQ "restaurant" scene, It's a fucking journey just to find cuts to smoke.
>go to costco
>no whole packer briskets, just a couple small flats

>go to a butcher
>"a whole brisket? lol that'll $15/lb"

>mention brisket to anyone and they automatically assume you're making pastrami

>go to another butcher
>ask for St. Louis cut spare ribs
>they have no idea what I'm talking about
>"wanna try this $39.99/lb grass fed antibiotic and hormone free filet mignon though?"

>"tri-tip???"
