I had to know for myself. It has paid off in the past before. For example making your own tomato sauce is more expensive, and has a marginal contribution to the actual taste (partially due to no easy access to san marzanos at least here in the states that are fresh). Same thing with pasta actually. Bread on the other hand is great to make yourself. Not too hard, costs like a quarter a bigass loaf and isn't full of bullshit.

Besides just doing cost-benefit analysis on shit sometimes just check the prices. Places like Walmart try to pull a fast one on you and price say a 20lb bag of rice more expensive per pound than a 10lb bag of rice. People assume (because logically it would make sense) that buying in bulk = cheaper. Well those fuckers didn't expect me to check the $/unit for each size and for some brands it is cheaper to buy more of the smaller sizes. Clever fuckers they are, most people will just blindly grab the 20lb.
