Root beer is notorious for using mint and sometimes licorice as an ingredient. Some asians are put off by that because they drown all medications in such flavorings, and are forced to go to school or work unless they're in the hospital, so it just tastes like misery.

Apparently the wintergreen in root beer is a major ingredient in toothpaste and cold medicine in Asia and Europe.
The only exception is Okinawa, since American troops imported A&W and the natives got used to it.

Foreigners have odd reactions to Murrican Root Beer.
In Japan, it smells like a popular cold remedy, so people don't like it.
