>do women talk about food and cooking when they're alone?

They may talk about food but they sure don't talk about cooking, as most (American) women can't boil water let alone actually cook something edible.

I'm a terrible cook and I hate cooking; everything is either undercooked
or overcooked or X item goes cold while Y item is still cooking, etc. and
I find all the preparations and clean up afterwards to be an annoying chore.

But I fell everyone ought to be capable of successfully and skillfully cooking
a minimum number meals and more people would be better cooks, if they
stuck to a few things they know and like, instead of trying to compete with
tv chefs and attempting elaborate complicated meals.

So, what would /ck/ consider to be a basic, fundamental meal menu and
what tools and skills are needed for them?;

Omelet - non-stick pan, spatula
Steak - grill, tongs
Pot Roast - electric crock pot
?
