You aren't just eating straight raw egg, man. It's usually served with cooked food, it provides a nice contrast and coating. Dipping hot meat into raw egg for sukiyaki, or having raw egg yolk mixed into hot oyakodon, it's really good.

I went to a restaurant in Yakushima that had a chicken rice bowl that was described as "medium rare."
I chalked it up to a translation error, but it was absolutely correct. That said I was fine, and undercooked eggs never hurt me either.
