How long does tap water last when in an air tight container?

I have one of those big 8 litre glass water dispenser things, it has an air tight tap fitting at the bottom, and an air tight metal lid. I always change the water out if it doesn't get drank every few days just out of habit, but in theory, so long as the container itself remains clean the water would last for months, right?
