I know exactly what you mean, and it does rub me the wrong way. Especially when it has exotic spices added to an old european recipe. Most of the peasant food we got here doesn't have more than 4 ingredients, and lacks meat, since it was extremely expensive till 30 years ago. A common base for many recipes is stale but not moldy bread soaked in water, since you couldn't afford to throw it away.
