It's because it shot down a Boeing by accident. In those days, radar was pretty rudimentary, and Russian interceptors like the Su-15 were guided toward their targets by ground control; those big missiles travel for miles to hit their target. So it was easy back then to mistake an airliner for a hostile that needed intercepting.
It never saw any other action.
