Sup /ck/?

So I've had an interest in trying cheeses for a while now, but don't really know where to start.

My local selection is pretty limited, and at best can get things like "herb goat cheese", smoked gouda, or brie. I am going to be in Seattle for an event next week though, and the place I'm staying is a short walk from a whole foods which I imagine will have a larger selection.

My question for you is: What should I try to find?

The people I'm staying with are also interested in trying some different cheese. I can say that we did once try a soft white cheese that had a purple rind (and had an unpleasant odor), and it tasted okay, but the smell was too much and we had to toss it.

I'm not one of those weirdos that eats Kraft singles or sprays ez cheese on his hand though
