Supplement meals easily with miso soup.
I do a easy simple mix of dahsi stock (the weird one that looks like fish food), miso paste, soy sauce, and fish sauce. Add green onion, tofu cubes, and seaweed for a basic soup.

There's a really good book called The Simple Art of Japanese Cooking that has a nice explanation of the basic flavors and ideas, then a bunch of staple recipes.
